And this is a terrible time for it to be slipping from public consciousness because Ukraine faces trouble on two fronts. (Reuters) - Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief said on Monday that his assistant, a major in rank, was killed when a booby-trapped birthday present he had been given exploded. "My assistant and close friend, Major Hennady Chastyakov, was killed in tragic circumstances on his birthday in a family setting," General Valery Zaluzhnyi wrote on the Telegram messaging app. The Ukrainska Pravda online news outlet said a security source was told by Chastyakov's wife that the gift was a bottle of liquor in the form of a grenade that he had brought home. The source told Ukrainska Pravda that Chastyakov, 39, was a graduate of a military academy and fully trained in handling grenades. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had denied any suggestion that the war has entered into a stalemate.

The Ukrainian military might need to create its own solutions, a retired army general told the Times. Ukraine uses the US-provided M58 Mine Clearing Line Charge (MICLIC) systems, which Zaluzhny told the Post "are also being destroyed," per the Post. "Ukraine needs a Manhattan Project for mine clearing," Ryan told the Times, referring to the US project to build the world's first atomic bomb during World War 2. Beyond the minefields, the two-month offensive to take back territories claimed by Russia has become a significant challenge for Ukrainian troops dealing with heavily fortified defenses from their opponents. At the same time, Ukrainian troops waited for weapons from the West.

Mines cause more wounds among troops than artillery, a Ukrainian medic told the NYT. At the same time, fiberglass rods are used instead of metal detectors to find electrically triggered mines, Insider previously reported. Wounds caused by plastic mines are particularly difficult to treat, as medics cannot locate where plastic shrapnel is embedded in the body using traditional methods like X-rays. Russian troops aren't the only ones deploying antipersonnel mines as they continue their invasion of Ukraine. Insider previously reported Human Rights Watch this month urged Ukrainian officials to investigate reports of butterfly mines being used against Russian soldiers.

Ukrainian forces have faced dense minefields while carrying out counteroffensive operations. It has forced Ukrainian units to move slowly on foot rather than using tanks or other vehicles. Ukrainian officials are now calling for F-16 jets and more mine-clearance equipment. The Russian defence ministry said four Ukrainian missiles hit a temporary Russian barracks in a vocational college in Makiivka, twin city of the Russian-occupied regional capital of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine's military has said it launched a strike that resulted in Russian loss of equipment and possibly personnel near Makiivka. A little known patriotic group which supports the widows of Russian soldiers is calling on Putin to order a large-scale mobilisation of millions of men and to close the borders to ensure victory in Ukraine. A U.S. State Department spokesperson said Washington had seen reports "that the Ukrainian military struck a Russian military barracks that stored ammunition inside of Ukrainian territory" and led to many Russian deaths.
